Auditions

Can I sign up online the day of the audition?
Nope. If you wish to sign up the day of the audition, you must call R2P stage manager Nia: 845-772-2957.

What are you auditioning for?
You will be auditioning for the season as a whole -- not a specific role or even a specific show -- and we will do our best to place you in the slot that matches best. Since we have no idea at this point of how many people will be auditioning, we don't know whether people will be cast in one show per season or more. Regardless, there will be ample opportunities (and invitations!) for people to be a part of all of the productions -- as part of a running crew, as a production assistant, or in other aspects of theatre production.

When are the shows?
Once Upon A Mattress: January 9-18 (High school only)
The Man Who Came to Dinner: February 20-22 (Middle and high school)
Spring Showcase: April 17-19 (Middle and high school)
Honk!: June 12-14 (Middle school only)
Footloose: August 7-16 (Middle and high school)
Little Shop of Horrors: September 18-20 (Middle and high school)

Check the
production calendar to look at the full schedule of rehearsals and performances to see which shows you’d be able to commit to. (You’ll be asked about your schedule and conflicts on the audition form when you sign up.)

What will the auditions consist of?

The auditions will consist of singing, acting, and dancing. (Not necessarily in that order – it’s up to you.) The singing and acting will take place during 4-minute slots, You will sing 16-32 measures of a song of your choice and perform a 30-60 second monologue. You may be asked to sing some scales, and we'll probably chat a little.

How can you find audition songs and monologues?
You can choose songs from musicals (listen to The Best of Broadway on 91.7 WICB every Sunday morning from 10am-12pmfor ideas.) or movies. You can find monologues in plays, books, movies or TV shows. The library and the good old interwebs are great places to look. (In case you need a head start looking for materials, we've created a
section with songs and monologues that you are welcome to use.)

What are we looking for?
You should have your songs and monologue memorized. We'll be looking for you to be audible, interesting, and confident. Even if you're nervous, pretend you're not (it's about acting after all!), and we won't know the difference. You should know who you are talking/singing to and why. What are you trying to convince them of? What effect do you want to have on them by saying this?

What should you do the day of the audition?
Be well rested and nourished. Arrive at least 20 minutes early so you can check in with the stage manager at the sign-in table, relax, get a drink of water, etc. before your audition. And remember, we want you to do great. We know that auditions can be nerve-wracking. (Believe us, we've done them, too!) Just keep in mind we want to see and hear everyone do great -- we're your biggest fans!

What else should you be prepared to do?
You should be prepared to tell us what your pieces are from, but not a whole summary or introduction. You should put your focus straight out while you speak/sing (so we can see your smiling face), but look over our heads -- not right at us. This way, we won't feel like we need to act in the scene with you, and you won't be distracted when we look down to write, "nice job!" or "would be good to play _____." You do not need to bring a headshot or other photograph. We will take a picture and videotape the audition for our reference. The only folks watching the audition will be Joey, Ross, Todd, Gail, and an accompanist. (Though we will be videotaping to aid our memories when we’re casting later.

Will there be a piano?
We will provide a piano accompanist. You should bring a copy of the music clearly marked with "Start" and "Stop." (Literally, write those words on the music so the accompanist knows where to begin and end playing.) You can take a moment before you start to introduce yourself to the accompanist and explain things like the tempo you'd prefer. You may also sing without accompaniment if don't have the music or would simply rather.

What about the dance audition?
At the dance audition, Todd will teach a short combination suitable for dancers of all levels. You'll have about 30 minutes to learn it and ask questions. You'll then get about 10 minutes to practice it without Todd. You’ll then be asked to show the combination in groups. You won’t be asked to dance solo. You don't necessarily need to wear dance clothes or shoes (although you are welcome to), but you should be able to move comfortably. Jeans, boots, short skirts, and excessive jewelry are not recommended.

What about callbacks?
Callbacks will be during the afternoon and evening on October 25 & 26. We will be scheduiling the times and locations soon. We don't know how many people will be called back since we don’t know how any people are auditioning. We will try to give as much notice as possible as to who is called back for what and when the callbacks will be. Remember, not everyone is going to be called back. It doesn't mean that you weren't terrific -- just that we only have so many hours in the day.

How do you sign up to audition?
You can sign up to audition here. You will click the date on an online calendar, and it will show you the available times for your song/monologue audition. You don't need to schedule a time for the dance audition -- the time you choose for your song/monologue audition will determine when your dance audition is (see above). When you sign up for the audition, you will be asked to complete an informational form online -- grade, school, experience, conflicts, etc. When you finish, you will get a confirmation by email with the time and date of your audition, as well as a link if you need to reschedule or cancel your audition.
